Retractable Screens for French Doors: Fit, Mesh and Everyday Use for Delaware Homes

French doors can open a room to the backyard, but insects can make leaving both doors open less appealing. A retractable screen offers a way to screen the opening when you need it and tuck the mesh away afterward. The right choice starts with how your doors work, not just their overall width.

Ashley Lauren Outdoor Living offers retractable screen door installation for Delaware homes. Before choosing a system, use these questions to prepare for an installer’s assessment.

How does screening a pair of doors work?

A retractable screen travels along tracks and stores in a housing beside the opening. Depending on the doorway and product, paired screens may meet across a French-door opening. Ask the installer to show where each housing, handle and meeting point will sit.

A fixed or swinging screen has a different everyday footprint. Picture carrying a tray outside, opening the inactive French-door panel or moving furniture through the full opening. The useful comparison is whether each proposed arrangement supports those routines.

Mirage’s glass-door screen guide describes how the housing and tracks work. Treat it as an introduction; the installer still needs to confirm your exact door configuration and the available model.

Check the whole doorway, including the threshold

The door opening is more than two measurements. Ask the installer to consider:

  • Whether the doors swing inward or outward, and which panel you use most.
  • Handles, locks and trim that could interfere with screen operation.
  • The sill and threshold, including how the lower track will meet the walking surface.
  • The space available beside and above the opening for the housing and tracks.
  • How the screen will open when both door panels are in use.

Send photographs from inside and outside, with the doors closed and open. Rough measurements help describe the project, but leave final sizing and mounting decisions to the installer. A system that fits the opening on paper may still need a different mounting detail around existing hardware.

Choose mesh for the actual use

Start by explaining what you want to manage: insects, regular traffic, pets near the door or a particular view. Ask which mesh options are compatible with the specific screen model, and compare visibility, airflow, operation and care.

A stronger mesh option does not turn an insect screen into a security barrier or a child or pet restraint. If an animal pushes at doors, explain that behavior before ordering. Discuss how the household will operate the screen and prevent collisions rather than relying on mesh strength alone.

Avoid assuming that every mesh offered for a fixed screen can be used in a retractable unit. Get the proposed model and mesh in writing so you know what is being quoted.

Make track care part of the decision

Think about what reaches the sill: garden soil, leaves, pet hair or sand from shoes. A screen beside a frequently used patio door may need more attention than one at an occasional-use opening.

Mirage’s care instructions call for keeping the bottom track clear, cleaning the system and using the recommended lubricant. They also recommend retracting the screen when it is not in use and when wind picks up. Follow the instructions supplied for your model rather than applying a general wind rating or an arbitrary cleaning product.

Ask the installer to demonstrate normal operation, cleaning access and what to do if the mesh or handle stops moving smoothly. For an existing damaged doorway screen, compare screen door repair and replacement before assuming an entirely new arrangement is necessary.

Bring a short brief to your consultation

You do not need a technical specification to start. Gather the doorway photos, rough opening size, swing direction, preferred color and a description of daily traffic. Add any concerns about pets, threshold access or existing door hardware.

Contact Ashley Lauren Outdoor Living to discuss a French-door screen assessment. Ask for the proposed system, mesh, mounting approach and care instructions so you can compare fit and everyday use with confidence.
